YEAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! Wohoooooooooooooooo!!!!
Another fine day….wayyyy tooo fine….. Italia really made my day. After a long n exhausting day at work (it was a lil better thanks to a long chat w Moet). Italy was facing Australia tonight. Both teams played very well on the first half. Italy had two golden chances, first from Gilardino whose kick was saved by Schwarzer and the second was left footed shot from Toni, again saved by the feet of Schwarzer though he already moved in the wrong direction. Australia had their chance from Chipperfield but Buffon showed his skills in keeping Italian goal save.
And the unfortunate event happened just a few minutes in the second half. Marco Materazzi, Italian hero in the match versus Czech was sent off after he tackled Marco Bresciano. It was a straight red card. Italy went down to ten men. Arghhhh…. I was starting to worry. And Australia really used their advantage, but Buffon demonstrated why he was named the best goalkeeper in the world. Toni was replaced by Barzagli after Materazzi was sent off. Then Totti came in, replacing Del Piero who hadn’t showed distinct contribution (too bad for him…). Australia kept on attacking. And when it seemed that the match would go to extra time, Italy got a penalty…Yes, after holding on with ten men from the beginning of the second half and being forced to defend like crazy, Italy got a chance to turn the situation. It was Fabio Grosso’s attempt which yielded in that penalty. He was rushing from Australian right wing and brought down by Australian defender (Well…I’m not really sure about the foul). The referee pointed at the spot and I almost scream… YEAHHHHHHHH….
Totti stepped up to take the kick. I felt lots of feelings. Anxious, Excited, Worry, they’re all mixed up. It seemed like my heart pounded at 300 bpm. I could feel jolts of electricity on my face. I was quickly taken back to 1994 World Cup final when Baggio stepped up to take the kick, to Euro 2000 semifinal when Totti was also stepping up to take the kick against Netherland (at that time Italy was also playing with only ten men). The camera focused on Totti’s eyes….I was sure that it would be the last chance Italy had in the normal time. Totti took the kick and scored. 1-0 for Italy YEAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
I raised my fist in ecstasy. And then I was quite surprised coz Totti was hugged by his team mates and the Italian officials. It turned out that the penalty was really the last action of the game. What a dramatic ending….n then the camera shot Australian players faces. They seemed very sad and still couldn’t believe that they lost, right on the end of normal time. To some of them (like Viduka, Aloisi, and Kewell maybe), this would be their last world cup. But in a game there’s always been the winning and losing side. Unfortunately Australia was on the losing side.
Another fine day….continuation from yesterday…..Ahhhhhh…now I can sleep with some peace in mind, just like what Alfie said in Alfie (a movie that I just watched yesterday)…..Thank you, God….for this truly dramatic ending…but it’s not the end of the journey, Italy still have to face Swiss or Ukraine in the quarter final and then face Germany or Argentina in the semifinal….then final awaits….. God bless Italy so they can be the world champion again…..that’s the perfect ending….for me lolz….
A lil bit addition, four Italy goals were scored by subtitute players. In their first match in the World Cup finals campaign, Vincenzo Iaquinta scored one goal and Italy won 2-0. In their last match of group stage versus Czech, both goals were scored by subtitute. Materazzi scored Italy first goal of the match just after 7 minutes he got into the pitch. The second goal of the match was scored by Inzaghi, which sealed Italy's 2-0 victory . And in the match against Australia, Totti who came into the field on the 75th minute scored Italian winning goal from the spot kick. The interesting part is, Italy won in these three matches. They couldn't win against USA even when they had numerical advantage (in that match, there's no goal from Italian subtitute). They could only get a 1-1 draw. Hmmmmmm........intriguing, huh??

Italian team and officials celebrate their success advancing to the quarter final. Is that Ciro Ferrara wearing maroon shirt on the right side???
