Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…. I’m in euphoria right now. Italy won 2-0 against Czech Rep. The goals were scored by Marco Materazzi at 26th minute and Filippo Inzaghi at 87th minute. Materazzi goal was an example of a fine set piece. He headed the ball into the net from Francesco Totti corner, maximizing his 193cm height. The second goal came after an Italian player dispossessed the ball from a Czech player in the midfield and they quickly assembled a counter attack that unleashed Inzaghi clear from any Czech defenders, went one on one with the Petr Cech (The Czech goalkeeper), went around him and drove the ball into an empty net. 2-0 for Italia. A goal that surely sealed Czech fate to go home early. YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Forza Italia…… Not so long before that, Inzaghi missed a header that supposed to be the second goal for Italy, but he really made it up with his goal….Later, Materazzi was named Man of The Match. He deserved it since he just came on the pitch for about 8 minutes after Alessandro Nesta had to be brought off due to groin injury, he scored a crucial goal when Italia was under pressure, a goal that turned the table around.
Well, anyway, watching the game really raised my spirit. Italia showed a fighting spirit that they didn’t show (or have?) in their match against USA. They won in ball possession and shots on goal. And they players were diligent to guard every inch of their ‘area’. It rejuvenated me after a not too good day. I had some problems with the internet connection which made me unable to update my blog at office and I had to assist in delivering the training coz the participants were too many. But it all wiped away watching Italia play.
I hope Italia can advance through the final and become the World Champion. I’ve been waiting for 12 years since last time Italia went through to the final. Back in 1994 when “Il Divino” Roberto Baggio wore the talismanic # 10 shirt, Italia went through the final after a dramatic journey from the group phase to semifinal. He was the man that made Italia went through to final, but unfortunately he was brutally (in my opinion) tackled by Bulgarian defender, Trifon Ivanov (yeah, I still remember his name, the one who injured my Baggio) in the semifinal. The injury made him unable to give his best contribution against Brazil in the final and the most painful moment was watching his penalty kick went up very high above the crossbar. Brazil won the shootout and became the first country in history who won the World Cup four times (later they added their fifth title in 2002 World Cup, thanks to stunning performance of Ronaldo). In the last world cup Italia was eliminated after South Korean defeated them 2-1. South Korean surprised the world in that World Cup. They’re really a meteor… (Meteor Ginseng….lol…you gotta understand Indonesian and know that at that time, Meteor Garden was very popular here to understand why Meteor Ginseng term is very funny). I really hope Italia can win their fourth title in this year World Cup. Still a long way to go…so Forza Italia….show your fighting spirit…….
Talking about soccer always make me excited. I remember Father Sindhunata’s column in yesterday Kompas. In short, he wrote that everybody’s longing for something divine in their soul, such as peace, happiness, joy (which was supposed they got from a spiritual experience involving God). Que madmodum desiderat cervus ad fonts aquarum, ita desiderat anima mea adte, Deus (Like a deer longing for a fountain, so is my soul longing for You, God). But people find the fulfillment of their longing in so many things, one of them is in soccer. It’s a very interesting article. I’m gonna try to find it again and write it down here.
Back to Italia. Their match against Czech was also brought some complication remembering some of the players play in the same club. For example Pavel Nedved (Czech) who plays for Juventus along with Gianluigi Buffon, Gianluca Zambrotta, Fabio Cannavaro and Mauro Camoranesi from the Italia side. But playing for country and club is two different things and they showed their professionalism by giving their best and put aside their friendship coz they’re rivals on the pitch. After the match ended, Nedved exchanged shirt with Cannavaro, his teammate in Juventus. It’s kinda sad watching Nedved, which is a hero for Juventus, an Italian soccer club in a defeated side. Another conflict of interest was between Buffon and Alena Seredova, his fiancée. Alena is a Czech supermodel (what is it between soccer player n supermodel?? do they have some kind of unwritten agreement that they should date each other???? lolz....). She was supporting Italia in their opening match against Ghana…. Can you imagine that? * big grin
Now I can sleep with a wide smile on my face, knowing Italia advance to the next round and they don’t have to meet Brazil which is likely to be the group champion. Once again, Grazie Dio…..
Forza Italia!
